African Clawed Frog Birthday Party: The Fully Aquatic Birthday That Never Leaves the Water
How to celebrate an African Clawed Frog birthday: the underwater feast format, safe prey for a fully aquatic amphibian, and the behavioral reality of celebrating with a frog that never comes out of the water.

African Clawed Frogs (Xenopus laevis) are fully aquatic, they never leave the water voluntarily. They’re hardy, long-lived (up to 15+ years in good conditions), and have been laboratory animals since the 1930s. Most keepers don’t see much behavioral expression from ACFs except during feeding, when they become active and grab food with their front claws.
The birthday is a feast event: variety prey in the water.
The Birthday Feast
Safe prey and food:
- Live or frozen bloodworms, the most reliable ACF treat
- Small earthworm pieces (appropriate size)
- Frozen brine shrimp
- Reptomin turtle sticks (a commonly used ACF staple), a quality brand for the birthday
- Frozen or freeze-dried daphnia
- Small feeder fish (guppies), controversial in some circles due to parasite risk; clean-sourced feeder fish are used by some keepers as an occasional treat
The underwater foraging format: Drop food at various points in the tank. ACFs use their lateral line system to detect movement; dropping multiple food items at once creates a multi-target feeding event that engages them more fully than one item at a time.

What to Avoid
- Live prey from wild sources (parasite risk)
- High-fat foods as a primary treat
- Dry land food, ACFs cannot eat out of water
