Crested Gecko Birthday Treats: The Fruit Mash Feast and the One Insect That Makes the Whole Party

Safe birthday treats for crested geckos: what Repashy and CGD mean as birthday food, safe fresh fruit additions, the birthday cricket offering, and how to make the birthday feast actually notable for a gecko who eats fruit mash every day.

Crested geckos eat a powdered diet (Repashy Crested Gecko Diet, Pangea Fruit Mix, Leapin’ Leachie, or similar CGD products) mixed with water to a smooth paste. This is the majority of their diet. A birthday feast is a more varied version of this, a better CGD mix, fresh fruit additions, and for the special occasion, a live insect.

The Birthday CGD Mix

Most CGDs are available in variety flavors, mango papaya, watermelon, passion fruit, and others. If your gecko usually eats one flavor, the birthday is an occasion to offer a different flavor, or to mix two flavors together. The novelty of a different scent and taste in the familiar paste format registers as a good day.

Fresh Fruit Additions

A small amount of fresh fruit added to or served alongside the CGD paste:

  • Mango (ripe, seedless, small piece), popular with many cresties
  • Papaya piece
  • Blueberries (one or two, they’re small enough to be bite-sized for most cresties)
  • Banana (very small amount, high sugar)

How to offer: A small piece of ripe fruit placed in the food cup next to the CGD, or mashed gently into the paste. Most cresties investigate novel food items immediately.

The Birthday Cricket

The birthday event is a single live cricket (appropriate size, no larger than the distance between the gecko’s eyes). Crested geckos are primarily frugivores but they eat insects opportunistically, and a live cricket triggers visible hunting behavior that the fruit paste doesn’t.

One cricket for the birthday. Not a weekly addition, CGD-based diets are nutritionally complete and too many crickets upset the calcium-phosphorus balance. One birthday cricket is the appropriate occasion use. Live Feeder Crickets

What to Avoid

  • Citrus in large amounts (acidic)
  • High-oxalate fruit in quantity (though occasional small amounts are fine)
  • Wild-caught insects
  • Any seasoned, processed, or preserved food
