Jumping spider birthdays are a genuine niche within the jumping spider keeping community. Phidippus regius (Regal Jumping Spider), P. audax (Bold Jumping Spider), and the various Hyllus species kept in Europe and Asia all have keepers who document birthdays, molts, and anniversaries. The community is active and genuinely enthusiastic about celebrating these animals.

The birthday feast is the event. Jumping spiders have excellent vision and will visibly track and respond to prey, the birthday feeding is interactive in a way that makes it worth watching.

The Birthday Prey Feast

The variety feeding format: Jumping spiders in captivity eat primarily fruit flies (for juveniles and small species), bottle flies, and crickets. A birthday is the occasion for a higher-quality or more varied offering.

For Phidippus regius adults:

  • A bottle fly (Calliphora sp.), larger prey that requires more active hunting Bottle Fly Pupae Feeder Insects
  • A large mealworm or waxworm for a size-appropriate treat
  • A dubia roach (small, appropriate size) for an adult P. regius

For P. audax and similar medium species:

  • Medium bottle flies
  • A small waxworm
  • A well-fed cricket

For juveniles and smaller species (Hyllus, etc.):

  • Hydei (large) fruit flies for the feast, more than the usual offering
  • A small bottle fly as the premium item

The presentation: Release the prey into the enclosure when the spider is already active and alert. Jumping spiders stalk prey methodically, watch the approach, the crouch, the pounce. This is the birthday entertainment.

The Birthday Photo

Jumping spiders are famous for making direct eye contact with cameras. This is real, their large principal eyes detect the lens and they orient toward it with evident curiosity. A jumping spider looking directly into a macro lens is the signature shot of the hobby.

For the birthday photo:

  • Use a macro lens or phone with macro mode
  • Get to the spider’s eye level (get on the ground if needed)
  • Have a fly or prey item behind the camera lens to attract attention
  • The spider will look directly at the camera when investigating the lens
  • Take the shot while they’re at rest, between movements

The result is a photo that non-spider people find unexpectedly charming because the direct eye contact reads as personality. That’s because it is.

The Best Birthday Gifts

New bioactive plants: Jumping spiders do well in planted enclosures with real plants. A new air plant (Tillandsia), a pothos cutting, or a small orchid adds complexity and hunting surface. Air Plant Tillandsia for Enclosure

Cork bark piece: A new cork bark hide or climbing surface. Jumping spiders use cork bark for hunting ambush, molting shelters, and resting. Cork Bark Piece for Enclosure

Fresh silk plants or artificial vines: For enclosures without live plants, a new silk plant arrangement provides new hunting territory to explore. Artificial Vines for Enclosure

A fruit fly culture: A fresh culture of Drosophila melanogaster or hydei as the birthday ongoing supply. Drosophila Fruit Fly Culture
