King Snake Birthday Party Ideas: Celebrating Your Lampropeltis

King snake birthday ideas for keepers of California kingsnakes, black kingsnakes, and related Lampropeltis species: the hatch day feast, morph photo session, and why king snakes might be the most underrated birthday reptile in the hobby.

King snakes (Lampropeltis species) are among the most underrated pet snakes in the hobby. They’re active, handleable, eat reliably, and come in a significant range of geographic subspecies and morphs. The California kingsnake (Lampropeltis californiae) is the most commonly kept, but the black kingsnake, the Florida kingsnake, the Mexican black kingsnake, and others all have dedicated following. The birthday is a hatch day celebration with a timely feeding, a morph photo session, and an appreciation for a snake that reliably performs, reliably eats, and is consistently easy to work with. In a hobby full of snakes that are finicky about one thing or another, the king snake is the one that just works.

Hatch Day vs. Gotcha Day

King snakes from reputable breeders typically come with hatch dates, particularly for the captive-bred morph market. Check your purchase paperwork. If you got yours from a rescue or store without records, gotcha day is the functional birthday.

The king snake morph market, while not as large as the ball python market, is well-developed. California kingsnake morphs include albino, lavender, banana, and various pattern mutations. Mexican black kingsnakes are kept primarily for their coloring. Documentation of hatch date with morph ID is standard practice from serious breeders.

The Birthday Feast

King snakes eat rodents in captivity. The format is the same as for all pet snakes:

Frozen-thawed prey, warmed to approximately 100°F before offering. Per VCA Hospitals’ king snake care guide, live prey is not recommended because it can injure the snake.

Appropriate sizing. Prey diameter approximately matching the snake’s widest point. For adult California kingsnakes, this is typically adult mice to small rats depending on the individual’s size.

Timing. Align the birthday feast with the snake’s normal feeding schedule. King snakes typically eat every 7 to 10 days for adults.

One difference from ball pythons. King snakes are more reliably food-motivated than ball pythons and far less likely to refuse prey. The birthday feast for a king snake will almost certainly be taken without drama. This is part of what makes them excellent beginner snakes: they eat.

Wait 48 to 72 hours after feeding before handling. Same rule as for all pet snakes.

The Birthday Morph Photo Session

This is the community celebration for king snakes. The morph photo is the annual record of color development and the community posting format.

California kingsnakes: The classic banded black and white is the most common. Albino variants show yellow and white or orange and white banding. The contrast at close range photographs extremely well.

Mexican black kingsnakes: Solid black with a slightly iridescent sheen in good light. The birthday photo for a Mexican black is often a close-up of the head showing the eye and the glossy black scale texture.

Top-down pattern shot. Standard morph documentation: laid on a contrasting surface, photographed from directly above. Shows banding pattern and head shape clearly.

The alert face. King snakes explore more actively than ball pythons and are often in motion. Photographing a king snake as it tongue-flicks while exploring gives a better sense of the animal’s personality than a coiled portrait.

Community posting. r/kingsnakes on Reddit and dedicated Lampropeltis Facebook groups celebrate hatch days enthusiastically. The standard format: a clear pattern photo, the species and morph, the hatch date and age, and a personality note (“she’s been eating adult mice since month 4 and has never refused a meal”).

Handling and Floor Time

King snakes are generally handleable and most become quite calm with regular contact. A few species-specific notes:

Active exploration. King snakes move more than ball pythons and are more likely to explore a room during floor time. They’re also faster. Keep the session supervised in a secure room.

Hook training. King snakes can be “nippy” as juveniles, particularly during feeding time. A snake hook to separate feeding behavior from handling behavior helps establish the distinction. Adult king snakes that are handled consistently rarely bite without provocation.

The birthday handling session. A 20 to 30 minute floor time session in a warm room is the birthday activity. King snakes will investigate furniture, explore new textures, and provide far more active photo subjects than a ball python in a defensive ball.

How Long Do King Snakes Live?

In captivity with proper care, king snakes typically live 20 to 30 years. California kingsnakes have been documented living past 30 years. This is a long birthday streak for a snake that’s been reliably feeding for most of those years.

FAQ

My king snake musked on me. Is this normal?

Musk (a foul-smelling secretion from glands at the tail base) is a defensive response. Young or newly acquired king snakes may musk during handling. With consistent positive handling, most outgrow this behavior. Wash the affected area with soap and water. It doesn’t stain but the smell lingers.

Can I keep two king snakes together?

No. King snakes are cannibals. They eat other snakes, including other king snakes, as part of their natural diet. Never house two king snakes together regardless of size, sex, or apparent compatibility. This is a hard rule with no exceptions.
