What Bearded Dragons Can Eat at a Birthday Party: The Safe List and the Firefly Warning

Complete ASPCA and vet-verified list of safe and unsafe foods for bearded dragon birthday parties. What beardies can eat as a birthday feast, what's toxic, and why fireflies are in a category of their own.

Bearded dragons are omnivores whose dietary ratio changes across their lifespan: juveniles eat roughly 70% insects and 30% plant material; adults flip to approximately 70% plant material and 30% insects. A birthday feast should reflect this, with protein content elevated as a treat while keeping the vegetable base appropriate.

One warning before the list, because it comes up in online beardie communities frequently: fireflies (lightning bugs) are lethal to bearded dragons. A single firefly contains bufadienolides, cardiac glycosides, at concentrations that can kill a beardie quickly. This is not a β€œmight cause problems” situation. It’s documented and serious. Never allow fireflies or any related glow insect anywhere near a bearded dragon.

The Birthday Feast Format

For adult beardies:

  • Primary: a varied salad of safe greens and vegetables, assembled before serving
  • Birthday protein: 2–3 extra dubia roaches or superworms (appropriate for adults) beyond the usual ration, or a small hornworm
  • Optional: a few pieces of safe fruit as a dessert item

For juvenile beardies:

  • More protein-forward: a larger-than-usual insect offering (crickets, BSFL, dubia roaches)
  • Supplemental greens as usual
  • Very small amounts of fruit if any

Safe Foods

Per VCA Hospitals bearded dragon feeding guidance:

Excellent birthday greens:

  • Collard greens, one of the best overall greens for bearded dragons
  • Mustard greens
  • Turnip greens
  • Dandelion greens and flowers (pesticide-free)
  • Endive
  • Arugula
  • Watercress

Good greens (in rotation):

  • Romaine lettuce (lower in oxalates than some)
  • Green leaf lettuce
  • Butterhead lettuce
  • Fresh parsley (moderate)

Safe vegetables:

  • Bell pepper (all colors), hydrating and nutritious
  • Yellow squash and zucchini

Safe fruits (occasional, treat only):

  • Blueberries
  • Mango pieces (small)
  • Papaya
  • Strawberry
  • Watermelon (small amount)
  • Peeled grape (very occasional)

Excellent birthday feeder insects:

  • Dubia roaches, best overall nutrition
  • Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL/NutriGrubs), high calcium, ideal feeder
  • Crickets (gut-loaded)
  • Hornworms, high moisture, soft body, a birthday treat many beardies love
  • Silkworms, nutritionally excellent
  • Superworms, higher fat, occasional adult treat

What to Avoid

Fireflies / lightning bugs (ANY glow insect): Lethal. Bufadienolides are cardiac glycosides present in fireflies at lethal doses for bearded dragons. This includes any firefly species, any related luminescent insect. Do not use them as prey. If a firefly enters an enclosure accidentally, remove it immediately.

Avocado: Persin toxicity.

Rhubarb: Oxalic acid.

Onion and garlic: Toxic to reptiles.

Wild-caught insects: Parasite and pesticide risk. All feeder insects should come from a clean captive-bred source.

High-oxalate greens in large amounts: Spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens, bind calcium and interfere with absorption. Small amounts in a varied salad are acceptable; a spinach-heavy salad is not.

Goitrogenic vegetables in large amounts: Kale, broccoli, cabbage, affect thyroid function with regular heavy feeding. A small amount in a varied birthday salad is fine; a kale-heavy salad weekly is not.

Citrus: Causes digestive upset in bearded dragons.

Iceberg lettuce: Nutritionally empty, high water, can cause diarrhea.
