What Can Chinese Water Dragons Eat at a Birthday Party? The Insectivore Plus Guide

Chinese water dragon birthday food guide: gut-loaded insects as the feast centerpiece, the plant and fruit component, the misting celebration, and what never goes into a CWD enclosure on any day. VCA Hospitals and ReptiFiles verified.

Chinese water dragons (Physignathus cocincinus) eat primarily insects with some plant matter and occasional small vertebrate protein. The birthday feast is an insect variety spread with gut-loaded crickets and dubias as the centerpiece, silkworms as the birthday treat, and possibly a small piece of fruit or a pinky for large adults. Like all chameleon-adjacent arboreal lizards, they also need a misting event for hydration, the birthday extended misting session is the real water celebration.

What Chinese Water Dragons Can Eat at a Birthday Party

Insects (primary birthday food):

  • Gut-loaded crickets (dusted with calcium), the staple feeder, increased quantity for the birthday
  • Dubia roaches, better nutritional profile than crickets; include in the birthday variety spread if the CWD accepts them
  • Silkworms, the birthday treat feeder. High calcium, good protein, soft body, readily eaten by most CWDs
  • Hornworms (one or two as treat), the dramatic birthday feeder; strong movement, enthusiastically taken
  • Black soldier fly larvae (NutriGrubs), high calcium, slow-moving, a good birthday addition

Plant and fruit component (secondary): Per VCA Hospitals, Chinese water dragons eat some plant matter and small amounts of fruit in their diet alongside insects. For the birthday:

  • Dark leafy greens (collard, mustard, dandelion), offered in small amounts
  • A small fruit treat: blueberries, mango pieces, papaya

Occasional protein for adults:

  • Pinky mice (large adults only, thawed/pre-killed), an occasional treat for large adults
  • Small earthworm pieces, some CWDs accept these

What Chinese Water Dragons Cannot Eat

Fireflies. Lethal to reptiles. Contains bufadienolides.

Wild-caught insects. Pesticide risk.

Avocado. Toxic per ASPCA.

Large prey for juveniles. Nothing larger than the space between the eyes.

Plant material as a staple. CWDs are primarily insectivores. The plant component is supplementary.

Avocado, onion, garlic. Toxic.

High-oxalate plants. Spinach, beet greens.

Processed food. No human food with salt or additives.

Humidity and the Birthday Misting

Chinese water dragons need 70 to 80% humidity. They drink from water droplets, like chameleons. The birthday misting session, extended to cover all surfaces thoroughly, is the hydration celebration.

They also need access to their water feature (a pool or large water dish) for soaking. Birthday day is a good occasion to clean and refill the water feature with fresh dechlorinated water.

FAQ

My Chinese water dragon has nose-rubbing damage from glass surfing. Does this affect what I feed for the birthday?

Rostral abrasion from glass surfing is a husbandry issue (enclosure too small, no visual barrier to prevent territory responses). It doesn’t change what the lizard can eat. Address the underlying cause (background on the glass, enclosure upgrade) and provide the birthday feast normally.

How many crickets is a birthday feast for a Chinese water dragon?

An adult CWD typically eats 6 to 12 appropriately sized feeders per feeding. A birthday feast of 10 to 15 crickets in the morning, plus the silkworm treat, plus a small plant addition, is appropriate.
