What Guinea Pigs Can Eat at a Birthday Party: The Complete Safe Foods List (With the Vitamin C Note)

Complete House Rabbit Society and ASPCA-verified list of safe and unsafe foods for guinea pig birthday parties. What they can eat, what they need (Vitamin C), and what to keep away.

Guinea pigs cannot synthesize Vitamin C. This is not a minor nutritional preference, it’s a metabolic fact. Without adequate dietary Vitamin C, guinea pigs develop scurvy: painful joint swelling, muscle weakness, and eventually death. Unlike other rodents, guinea pigs lack the enzyme L-gulonolactone oxidase needed to produce Vitamin C internally. This is the starting point for any guinea pig birthday treat planning.

The good news: the safe foods list is broad, the dangerous foods list is short, and building a Vitamin C-rich birthday spread is easy.

The Vitamin C Requirement

Guinea pigs need 10–30mg of Vitamin C per day. On a birthday, the treat spread should contribute meaningfully to this, not undermine it.

Highest Vitamin C foods for guinea pigs (per 100g):

FoodVitamin C (mg/100g)
Bell pepper (red)127.7mg
Bell pepper (green)80.4mg
Kale93mg
Broccoli89.2mg
Parsley133mg
Romaine lettuce24mg
Strawberry58.8mg
Orange53.2mg

Bell pepper, especially red bell pepper, is the single best Vitamin C source for guinea pigs in a practical treat context. Most guinea pigs eat it readily. A birthday spread anchored in bell pepper strips, parsley, and romaine provides the Vitamin C requirement easily.

Safe Foods (Full List)

Per VCA Hospitals and Humane Society guinea pig feeding guidelines:

Vegetables:

  • Bell pepper (all colors, highest red), best birthday treat
  • Romaine lettuce, green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce
  • Arugula
  • Cucumber
  • Zucchini
  • Carrot (in moderation, high in natural sugar)
  • Broccoli (small amounts, causes gas in excess)
  • Celery
  • Peas (a few fresh peas are fine)
  • Endive
  • Watercress
  • Beet greens (moderate amounts)

Herbs (excellent Vitamin C sources):

  • Flat-leaf parsley, very high Vitamin C, widely enjoyed
  • Cilantro
  • Fresh basil
  • Dill
  • Fresh mint (in small amounts)

Fruit (treat quantities only, 1–2 tablespoons per day maximum):

  • Strawberry, popular and provides Vitamin C
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Apple slices (seeds removed)
  • Watermelon (small amount, rind included)
  • Pear (core removed)

What to Avoid

Iceberg lettuce: Not toxic, but nutritionally empty and the high water content causes diarrhea. Use romaine or green leaf instead.

Cabbage, broccoli in large amounts: Cruciferous vegetables cause significant gas in guinea pigs. A small floret of broccoli is fine; a large amount is uncomfortable for the pig.

Potatoes and potato plants: Solanine in the flesh and particularly in green parts and leaves.

Rhubarb: Oxalic acid; kidney damage.

Onion and garlic: Hemolytic anemia. All forms, raw, cooked, powdered.

Avocado: Persin toxicity.

Chocolate and caffeine: Toxic.

Corn kernels in excess: High starch, not appropriate as a primary treat. A small amount is fine.

Commercial guinea pig treats with added sugar: Many pet store treats have corn syrup or other added sugars. Check ingredients. A fresh strawberry is a better treat than a sugary processed treat shaped like a strawberry.

Dairy products: Guinea pigs cannot digest dairy. No cheese, yogurt, or milk.

Seeds in large amounts: Some seeds are high in fat and potentially hazardous. Avoid large seed mixes as birthday treats.
